Hatfield Accident Firms Are Fined £13.5 million 7. oktober 2005 NETWORK Rail and Balfour Beatty have been fined a total of £13.5 million for their roles in the fatal derailment at Hatfield, Britain, in 2000.

Four people died in the accident, which was caused by a broken rail. Balfour Beatty, the contractor responsible for the stretch of track, was fined £10 million for its part in allowing the infrastructure to deteriorate. Network Rail, whose predecessor, Railtrack, was infrastructure owner at the time, was fined £3.5 million - the highest ever imposed on a British rail company for breaches of safety rules. Network Rail and Balfour Beatty were also ordered to pay £300,000 each in costs
